Well that is what the New York Times is hoping as today they have unveiled social bookmarking links to Digg, Facebook and Newsvine for the first time. Links to social bookmarking sites is nothing new for regular bloggers but this move by the NYT is notable simply because it comes from a ‘traditional’ newspaper.

More evidence demonstrating the maturity of internet advertising has been recently published by the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers. It claims that internet advertising revenues reached an estimated new record of $4.2 billion for the third quarter of 2006.

According to the Newspaper Association of America online newspapers received an average of 57 million visitors a month last quarter: an increase of 24% increase from last year (via Media Post). What’s interesting is that web readers are spending more time on the newspaper sites.

One of the advantages of publishing online is that it is very easy to group content together in an orderly fashion. In fact it is vital that this happens so that websites are easy to navigate. One tool that helps achieve this is the use of tags. Tagging content with keywords helps bring structure to a website’s content. Its freeform nature provides gateways to content that make a site easier to navigate.

When we meet up with publishers and talk about the benefits we provide we are often asked “Why should we bother publishing our print magazine online?” It is often the precursor to a question like “Won’t it erode our subscriptions?” or “We put a PDF online what’s wrong with that?” There are plenty of benefits to publishing an online edition: we’ve put together our top five that apply to regular publications such as newsletters, journals and of course magazines.
