One of the advantages of publishing online is that it is very easy to group content together in an orderly fashion. In fact it is vital that this happens so that websites are easy to navigate. One tool that helps achieve this is the use of tags. Tagging content with keywords helps bring structure to a website’s content. Its freeform nature provides gateways to content that make a site easier to navigate.
Tags has been around in one form or another for a long time but it is only recently that it has been widely adopted to help bring structure to content and provide real value in the form of a digital index or archive of website content. Consistent use of tags of a period of time allows publishers to easily build relationships with historic content. This is something that is very difficult to achieve in traditional print where back issues are often misplaced and difficult to cross reference. Online it is different: it is easy to cross reference other content. In fact it is the foundation of the World Wide Web that this is possible.
Tags are the glue that bind a website’s content together. Think of them in the same way index cards work in libraries: they are there to help guide you quickly to the books you want. Tags do the same. An example of this can be seen on the AIM Bulletin’s website - here we have provided a list of tags that organise the website’s content. To help access the information of interested we have listed tags by popularity and in alphabetical order.
Tags also come in useful to make sense of content across the web. They form one of the vital tools that have helped the rise of social media. Sites like Technorati rely, in part, on bloggers tagging their content. By doing so Technorati can provide some taxonomy to the blogs and content they index.
So if you haven’t started tagging start now. The long term benefits mean that your website’s content will be valuable to both you and your readers.
